Costa wants SNS management to generalize and manage good practices in an integrated way

The Prime Minister deemed it essential this Monday that the National Health Service (SNS) executive management generalize good practices, increase equal access to the system and operate 24-hour network management.

This position was conveyed by António Costa during the presentation session of the new executive management of the SNS, led by Fernando Araújo, former Secretary of State and former President of Hospital de João, in Porto, which took place in the auditorium of Infarmed, in Lisbon.

In a speech after the speech of the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro, the leader of the executive again presented a series of figures on the increase in investment in the SNS from 2015 to the present. But this time, he also supported the statement that the demand for healthcare in the Portuguese has increased, especially “after the success” in the fight against covid-19.

“A fundamental condition for the trust of citizens, of users, is the existence of confidence that they have equal access to the SNS regardless of where they live. The condition of access is not only a question of social justice, it is also a matter of regional equity. The good practices identified and developed in a region or in an institution should be generalized to all institutions,” the Prime Minister stressed.

A reference by António Costa to the issue of alleged inequality in terms of quality standards within the SNS, when he refers to Hospital de São João, in Porto, led by Fernando Araújo, as an example at the national level in terms of management and efficiency.

After addressing issues related to the strengthening of human and material resources in hospitals and health centers, or with the legislative framework through the adoption of the basic health law, the Prime Minister defined as a priority “improving the management of the SNS”.

According to the executive leader, the adoption of the new SNS statute was a “fundamental step, not only because it created executive direction, but also because it presents other essential challenges for retaining and motivating professionals.”

“The establishment of the SNS Directorate is of utmost importance as it effectively complements the strengthening of autonomy. We must guarantee that we are SNS 365 or 366 days a year and during the 24 hours of human life,” says he. stressed out.
