Liberal initiative. Rui Rocha proposes “TAP control” and changes to the school calendar

Speaking to the Lusa bureau, the candidate for the leadership of the IL outlined the general lines of the global strategy motion to be presented in Porto on January 7 next year, “a program aimed at a vision of the country in the medium and long term, an alternative view of what all the other parties have, too keen to maintain the current situation.”

This vision, according to Rui Rocha, is reflected “in a series of measures to be implemented in the very short term”, including the proposal for a different school calendar because “the summer school break is very long, it harms learning and the main victims are the most disadvantaged” .

“We will also receive the proposal of a ‘TAP check’. This measure has to do with the fact that the Portuguese are already contributing more than 3.2 billion euros in the context of the nationalization of TAP and it makes perfect sense that , when there is a privatization, whatever value the state receives for this privatization, it will in any case be returned to the Portuguese,” he explained.

Taking advantage of the fact that “the assistencialist vision of the government has prepared the administrative machinery for the repetition of this type of operation”, the liberal candidate wants “the right means to be used so that the value determined in the privatization is distributed among the Portuguese and not that it remains in the treasury of the state”.

“We will also immediately have a concrete proposal to clearly fight the PS and the PSD if they stick to their intention to include administrative restrictions in the constitution, without prior validation by the Assembly of the Republic or the courts,” he promised .

Rui Rocha also wants to “simplify the licensing of energy communities and collective self-consumption” as 170 are awaiting licensing and the energy transition and environmental concerns “cannot collide with state bureaucracy”.

“The strategy motion will have three fundamental parts: a turn towards the political struggle that will take place during this mandate, so with a very clear vision for the regional elections in Madeira, the Azores and for the European elections, with very concrete objectives of election and presence in these parliaments,” he reveals.

When asked if he intends to follow the same strategy to quantify what will be a good result in these three elections – as João Cotrim Figueiredo did in the last parliamentary elections – the IL presidential candidate guarantees that this will be the way to go to trade. if chosen.

“In terms of the strategy motion, there will be left to have parliamentary representation in the parliaments where we do not have it and to duplicate the presence in the regional parliament of the Azores. In each of the electoral programs there will be a precise quantification of what a good will be a result of the Initiative Liberal’, he says.

With regard to the internal issues of the party, Rui Rocha comes up with concrete proposals, such as quarterly meetings of the party chairman with groups of cores, the importance of regular and targeted training for all members and cores and also the existence of a team of professional support to core support.

Rui Rocha and Carla Castro, both deputies and current executive committee, are provisionally the two candidates to succeed João Cotrim Figueiredo in the leadership of IL, after the surprise of anticipation of the party’s election calendar.

The IL election convention will take place on January 21 and 22, 2023 in Lisbon.
