Pension reform: LR and the Government take a first step towards each other

To avoid going through box 49.3, the executive is forced to seek allies of convenience to carry out its reform. It seems that a door has been opened ajar with Les Républicains.

A political compromise on the right track? Elisabeth Borne is preparing to unveil her explosive pension reform on Tuesday during a press conference in which several ministers are expected to participate. According to the latest trends, the Prime Minister should finally propose a postponement of the legal age of departure to 64 years and not 65 years, compared to the current 62 years.

According to information from ParisianConfirmed by concordant sources from BFMTV, it is this hypothesis -that people born after 1968 would take three months per generation to reach this age- which is “privileged by the government”.

On a trip to Denain, in the north, at the beginning of December, the President of the Republic had left this exit door for himself if he felt “too much anxiety” from the French.

LR wins 64 year old case

An exit that is also political for the executive. The government’s room for maneuver is restricted by the lack of an absolute majority in the National Assembly. To ratify this reform without going through 49.3, the Executive must resort to circumstantial allies: The Republicans (LR).

Only, at first, the right-wing party was reluctant to support this reform, as evidenced by the departure of the leader of the LR deputies, Olivier Marleix, who assured that he did not support the reform at the legal age of 65. “Shaking this figure of 65 today, when the government does not make any effort to reduce public spending, the French would not understand that, they would understand it as a provocation” and “we would not support this reform,” said the president. of the LR deputies, asks to go there “step by step”.

In an interview granted to JDDthe new strong man of the republicans, Éric Ciotti, says that he is willing to “vote a fair reform” of pensions and believes that he has been heard by the Government after asking the president of the Government to “mitigate the brutality of the reform”.

“Politically, the government right has always defended the need for a pension reform that leads to working a little more,” he also justifies.

An approach accelerated by repeated calls on foot from members of the government. This Sunday always with the JDDthe Minister of Public Accounts, Gabriel Attal, called for “the consistency of all and in particular of the Republicans” to approve this reform.

“If we count the deputies from both camps, there is a majority! I tell the LR: we cannot leave for tomorrow what we wanted yesterday. […] Accompany a reform that he has requested ”, he insists. A majority that, arithmetically, would exempt the Executive from going through box 49.3.

To the left, the protest

On the other hand, the government cannot hope to find allies further to the left of the political spectrum. In recent weeks, various political figures have managed to show their disagreement with this reform. This is the case of the MEP Manon Aubry who points to a reform “neither useful nor necessary”.

“We are pushing the retirement age faster than life expectancy is increasing and that is why January must be the month of great general mobilization,” he assures our antenna.

On Saturday, rebel MP Danielle Simonnet, a BFMTV guest, denounced “the liberal politics led by Emmanuel Macron” which is “unlimited social abuse.”

The much denounced text will be examined in the Council of Ministers on January 23 but the unions, which meet on Tuesday night, plan to mobilize before that date, while on the left the Nupes meet on January 10 and 17 and that shows LFI on 21

The bill must go through commission in the National Assembly as of January 30, and in the Chamber on February 6, for two weeks, according to parliamentary sources.
