The parliamentary group of the Liberal Initiative has requested the President of the Assembly of the Republic to hold an urgent hearing with Defense Minister Helena Carreiras and Army Chief of Staff General Nunes da Fonseca following the news that this Friday was published by DN about the conditions a woman encountered during her enlistment in the Emergency Military Support Regiment.
“We were surprised by the news published by Diário de Notícias reporting the circumstances that ‘Catarina’ (fictitious name) encountered during her recruitment into the Emergency Military Support Regiment. As reported, ‘Catarina’ had high hopes regarding serving the land in the armed forces and was aware that the physical part would be a challenge to overcome, however, the physical strain eventually led to exhaustion and anxiety, resulting in a tachycardia crisis. Despite the three-day medical leave that had been prescribed, due to failure to cleaned the weapon well, “she was forced to crawl on the dirty floor at night, several meters”, after being hit in the face by a stone coming from the direction where the drill sergeant was “can be read in the document to which the DN had access.
According to the Liberal bench, what was reported “exceeds the boundaries of what is expected of a military recruit, creating defiance and a sense of discipline, with the application of punishments clearly exceeding the boundaries of dignity and respect”.
For deputies, this case could have an impact “on the advancement of gender equality and the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, one of this administration’s top political priorities in the defense field”.
