This is a phenomenon found mainly in the Sologne, in the Center-Val de Loire: large forest areas delimited by fences whose effect is to hinder the movement of animals and facilitate hunting.
However, the situation should change: a bill aimed at “limiting the fencing of natural spaces and protecting private property” was approved in a second reading in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Therefore, the fences must be placed 30 centimeters from the ground surface and not exceed 1.20 meters in height. Some are currently at 2 meters.
Entry into force in 2027
The new fences must not be “neither vulnerable nor constitute traps for fauna.” In other words: do not pose an obstacle to certain animals. Only those made with “natural or traditional materials” will be authorized.
In exchange for these measures, the text provides for the creation of a fine for unauthorized intrusions into these private areas. Once passed, the law could go into effect in 2027. By then, fences will have to meet the new standards.
