New Secretary of State for Agriculture will be appointed “soon”.

The appointment of a new holder of the Secretary of State for Agriculture is coming “soon” and will happen “of course”, the Agriculture Minister clarified in an interview, who must “reflect” on this choice with the Prime Minister.

“Of course, yes, that we’re going to introduce it [o secretário de Estado] soon and will be made public as soon as it proves opportune,” said the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Maria do Céu Antunes, in an interview with Antena1, which will be broadcast on Sunday.

The minister’s statements come after an amendment to the government organization was published on Friday that no longer included the secretary of state for agriculture and assisted the minister only by the secretary of state for fisheries, a change that led farmers’ representatives to call for it to be lifted. of the Secretariat.

However, the government rejected this interpretation, arguing that it rather reflected the composition of the executive branch, which had changed since January 5, with the resignation of Carla Alves because she lacked “political and personal circumstances” to take office after a seizure was announced. of the joint bank accounts with her husband, she no longer has that secretary.

“Soon we will have an appointment (…) We are considering it, the Prime Minister and I, and in due course we will announce who will fill this position,” said the minister, clarifying that the option is for a choice of office and refusing that there has been any extinction of the Secretary of State.

The minister stressed that the government “needs the necessary and sufficient time” to make this choice, which it will do “soon”, but that it will take “the necessary time to complete” the ongoing reflection.

When asked if the lack of a Secretary of State for Agriculture since Carla Alves stepped down means the government is struggling to find people up to the job, she replied: “No, on the contrary, very well suited to take on these positions “.

Maria do Céu Antunes clarified to the Secretary of State that she had refused invitations: “I have not refused invitations, I have not made any invitations. As I said, we are in a period of reflection and soon we will have an agreement that we will make it public (. . .) In due time we shall realize”.

The minister confirmed what was announced on Friday at a dedicated press conference by the Secretary of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, André Moz Caldas, that “there is a misinterpretation” being made of the decree law published on Friday and the structure of the executive power changes.

This decree-law “concerns the mirror of the government,” said the minister, emphasizing that there is no question of extinction and announcing that “once the new or new Secretary of State for Agriculture takes office, this decree-law should be changed from new”.

The same position was defended the day before by André Moz Caldas, who justified this amendment to the organic law of the government as “only a matter of a formal and procedural nature”, announcing that “reflection on the composition” of the executive is up to the progress in agriculture.
