Pension reform: for Elisabeth Borne, “the issue is not so much working 2 more years”

The Prime Minister once again reaffirms her determination to raise the retirement age, judging “not to do it for fun”. “It takes a lot of listening and humility,” says the Matignon tenant.

Round your back. Elisabeth Borne tries again to smooth things over in the midst of a review of the pension reform in the National Assembly, maintaining her determination and delving into the field of well-being at work.

“In my constituency, for a certain number of citizens, the issue is not so much working 2 more years, it is that they are not happy in their work”, judges the Matignon tenant in the daily columns.

“A very sensitive issue in our country”

If the French continue to massively oppose the pension reform at 72% according to the latest Elabe poll for BFMTV, the head of government sees in this rejection the question of well-being in professional life.

“It is a very sensitive issue in our country (…). It requires a lot of listening and humility, especially since our system is complicated and little known,” the prime minister advanced this Thursday night, questioned by the readers of the voice of the north.

In the middle of the pension reform, several members of the government insisted on “the relationship with work” such as Gabriel Attal, in charge of the Budget, who highlighted the four-day week lived in Urssaf.

“Shocked to hear” that the reform will penalize women

Elisabeth Borne also defended the impact of the pension reform on women. They will be “a little penalized” by the postponement of the age of majority that will increase to 64 years in 2030, according to the words of the minister in charge of relations with the French Parliament, Franck Riester.

“I’m quite surprised to hear” that. “Obviously, I am not supporting a reform that penalizes them. (…) Today, they often continue to work, but are penalized with lower wages and part-time work,” said the Prime Minister.

According to the impact study of the bill, women will be more affected than men by the postponement of the retirement age. In return, their pensions will increase a little more than those of men thanks to this reform.

Sanctions “starting this year” on the employment of older people

The issue of employment of older people is also one of the sticking points between the unions. From the age of 60, the employment rate drops very sharply to 35.5% and even to 20% from the age of 64 according to figures from the Ministry of Labour.

After having already confirmed that the executive will resume the extension of the senior index to companies with more than 50 employees to account for their presence in the company and mentioned financial sanctions, Élisabeth Borne details the process chosen by the government.

They will be implemented “in large companies, starting this year, with sanctions if they refuse to complete it or if the index is bad and no action plan is proposed.”

“We must change our vision of older people in companies, stop depriving ourselves of their skills and experience by freeing them up time, for example, for tutoring. We must change practices”, adds the prime minister, without giving specific clues.

Will that be enough to convince? With 2 days to go before a new mobilization this Saturday, more than 4 out of 10 French people want the movement to harden, in the form of a greater mobilization, blockades or even renewable strikes according to the Elabe institute.
