PSD defends compulsory and universal assessment tests in 4th and 6th year

The PSD wants to introduce assessment tests at the end of the 4th and 6th grades, announced the Social Democratic parliamentary group this Saturday, which also recommends that the government update the funds for School Social Action.

According to the bill released on the day of the teachers’ demonstration, which will be debated in parliament on December 22, the PSD defends the introduction of assessment tests, of universal and compulsory application, to be carried out at the end of the 4th year and the 6th grade.

“The results of these external assessments should be available at the end of the school year, in order to assess the knowledge and skills of students and the way in which the education system is fulfilling its role”argue the Social Democrats.

With this proposal, the PSD wants to replace the assessment tests in the 2nd, 5th and 8th grade.

The bill states that the marks obtained in the tests in the 4th and 6th grade must be used to weigh the final ranking, at the choice of the school or school group.

In a document summarizing the objectives of this proposal, the PSD defends that “external evaluation of student learning is one of the most important tools to know and monitor the education system, as well as to define policies to improve it and make it more effective.” to make. “.

At the same time, in the state budget for 2024, the PSD also wants to guarantee “an increase in the allocation for school social action to expand the range of beneficiaries of the different levels and a different correspondence between the levels of child benefit and defined for school social action” .

In this sense, during the debate on education scheduled for the plenary session of the 22nd, it will present a draft resolution, which has the character of a recommendation to the government, so that it updates the funds for School Social Action.

The Social Democrats are calling for changing the current correspondence between levels, as well as automating the award of the merit scholarship, eliminating the need to apply, as long as students meet the requirements.

Added to this is a second draft resolution aimed at “enhancing the effectiveness, duration and funding of learning recovery measures developed autonomously by public schools”.

With this recommendation to the government, the PSD wants to promote the impact assessment of the 21|23 Escola+ Plan, as well as strengthen the funding of this program.

Social Democrats also defend the extension of the learning recovery plan, with a time horizon up to 2026.

“De-bureaucratizing: bringing teachers back into education” is the name of the third draft resolution released today, which aims, among other things, to “as a matter of urgency eliminate all tasks that do not contribute to the quality of the educational process or are superfluous”. .

Finally, and as can be read in the summary of the proposals, the PSD emphasizes that it “urgently wants to promote interoperability between the numerous existing platforms, which will allow the reduction of bureaucracy in educational work”.

On February 2, the PSD announced the schedule for a debate on education on February 22.

Speaking to journalists, parliamentary leader Joaquim Miranda Sarmento said at the end of the session of the PSD bench that the party would present “a series of initiatives” until the (mandatory) potestative debate.
