The Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic says the parliament, in the diversity of its opinions, will strive to improve the National Health Service, which he considered a “treasure” and one of the great achievements of democracy.
This point of view of Augusto Santos Silva is contained in a video message released this Thursday on the occasion of SNS Day.
“The Assembly of the Republic will constantly strive, in the diversity of its opinions, to improve this treasure of ours that is the SNS”assures the former Minister of State and Foreign Affairs.

The Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic begins by noting that the parliament approved the SNS on September 15, 1979, and then defends that “the health of the Portuguese has improved significantly” over the past 43 years.
He cites two examples in this regard: “Life expectancy was 71 years old in the late 1970s and now it is 80 years old and infant mortality has fallen from 26 per thousand to 2.4 per thousand.”
“It is clear to everyone the absolutely decisive contribution that the SNS has had and continues to make in improving these health indicators and in the advancement of the well-being of the Portuguese and Portuguese”maintains.
Regarding the political debate on the functioning of this sector, Augusto Santos Silva emphasizes the existence of different perspectives.
“One can argue about the best way to be funded, organised, managed and deliver the services for which it is responsible, but one thing is certain: the SNS is one of the great achievements of Portuguese democracy and is one of the great factors of unity among the Portuguese”advocate.
