IL will leave the conference room when Lula speaks at the April 25 formal session

The leader of the IL announced this Sunday that if the Brazilian president speaks at the formal session on April 25, the liberal deputies will leave the chamber, expecting that the president of the Assembly of the Republic will not propose this intervention.

Speaking to the Lusa bureau after the National Council of the IL that took place in Coimbra, Rui Rocha was asked about the controversy surrounding the possibility of Lula da Silva speaking at the April 25 formal session taking place in parliament.

“If this scenario, which I want to believe is not going to happen, in which case the Liberal Initiative will participate as always with enormous enthusiasm in the solemn commemoration meeting of April 25, but at the moment when there is an intervention by President Lula da Silva, at that point the seats on the bench of the Liberal Initiative will be empty.” warned.

However, the expectation of the president of the IL is that Augusto Santos Silva “will not continue with this intervention of Lula da Silva in the solemn session of April 25”, taking into account the positioning of PSD, Chega and the IL itself, given the fact that he would be “to push for something that would associate the April 25 celebration with a moment of division in which a significant portion of the parties have already spoken out and disagreed”.

“The President of the Assembly of the Republic, with regard to the commemorations of the 50th anniversary of April 25, understood not to include any event or reference to November 25, considering that it was a date divided the Assembly of the Republic,” he recalled.

Repeatedly that “the second, third and fourth largest parties represented in the Assembly of the Republic are not in favor of the participation of President Lula da Silva”, Rui Rocha wants to believe that, “in accordance with this intention not to associate these dates with questions ” that can cause division, Santos Silva will not propose Lula da Silva’s speech.

On Friday, Santos Silva said he was gathering “all the information” needed to propose to the parties how to organize the “welcoming session” for Brazil’s president during his state visit in April.

On the eve, in response to the Lusa news agency about the announcement in Brasília by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, that the Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, would speak at the Assembly of the Republic in the solemn session of April 25, an official source from Augusto Santos Silva’s office referred any decision to “in due course”.

“According to the Rules, the agenda is set by the PAR, after hearing the Conference of Leaders, and it will be done in due course with regard to the sessions to be held in the second half of April,” replied Santos Silva’s office , without further information.

That afternoon, in parliament, Chega and Iniciativa Liberal criticized the foreign minister for announcing that the Brazilian president would speak at the April 25 commemorations, deeming it “a disrespect” for parliament and an “unacceptable trampling” .

However, that same day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, clarified that the Assembly of the Republic “is sovereign in the decisions it takes.
