This Wednesday, the PSD leader welcomed parliament’s decision to hold a formal reception session for Brazil’s president separate from the one set for April 25, saying the party’s presence was never in question.
The Assembly of the Republic will host a formal welcome session for Brazil’s President, Lula da Silva, the President of the Parliament, Augusto Santos Silva, announced today, indicating details such as the date are yet to be determined.
“We will be delighted to host the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil in a solemn welcoming session, which will be particularly indebted to him,” Augusto Santos Silva announced at the end of a session of the leaders’ conference.
In the margins of a visit to the Lisbon Tourism Office, Luís Montenegro considered that this position “corresponds to the opinion he had already expressed”.
“Portugal, nor its sovereign bodies, can ignore the state visit of the Brazilian president to Portugal. Our only objection was that this should happen at the same time as the formal session on April 25,” he said.
For Montenegro, this would be “inappropriate”, because the April 25 session is the session where the parties, the President of the Assembly of the Republic and the President of the Republic give speeches and “call for the conquest of freedom”.
“It would be inappropriate to include any disruption to the normal functioning of this evocative session.
Montenegro considered it preferable for this session dedicated to Lula da Silva to take place on the day before or after 25 April, but if it is not possible for reasons of the agenda, it will not oppose it either, as long as the separation of ceremonies is guaranteed .
“Of course, the PSD and its chairman will be present at the reception of President Lula da Silva, this is not and has never been in question,” he assured.
According to the president of the parliament, Lula da Silva will intervene at that ceremony, but he indicated that the details, such as the date, will now be handled by him “through the appropriate channels”.
Augusto Santos Silva also said his proposal received a “very large consensus” at the leadership conference and only one party opposed it.
