The Liberal Initiative (IL) deputy and an independent deputy in the Azores parliament this Wednesday broke the parliamentary advocacy deal signed with the social democrats in support of the regional coalition government, which brings together PSD, CDS-PP and PPM.
“As of today, after all the efforts we have made to implement this agreement to the end, we are obliged to tell the Azores that the IL will communicate to the representative of the Republic that it is freeing itself from the parliamentary incidence agreement that signed it with psd”said liberal Nuno Barata during a political intervention in the plenary session of the Legislative Assembly that took place in the town of Horta, on the island of Faial.
The deputy justified the decision with the “force that PSD partners in the governing coalition are doing every day so that nothing changes and the inability of this PSD to promote the necessary stability among its coalition partners.”
“Today I also resign [do acordo de incidência parlamentar]. There are defaults and lack of institutional respect. Since I left the party [Chega] there are non-compliance, I was treated like a minor relative. I will inform the representative of the Republic that I will no longer abide by the agreement,” independent deputy Carlos Furtado (formerly Enough) stressed in turn.
With the breaking of the agreement between IL and the independent deputy, the parties in the coalition and Chega’s deputy now represent 27 parliamentarians, while the parties that did not formally support the executive in this legislature represent a total of 28: 25 from the PS , two from BE and one from PAN. Thus, the absolute majority that the regional government had in the legislative assembly is lost.
PSD, CDS-PP and PPM, representing 26 deputies together, signed a governance agreement after the October 2020 elections.
The coalition also signed a parliamentary advocacy agreement with Chega and independent deputy Carlos Furtado (elected by Chega) and the PSD an agreement with IL.
The Legislative Assembly of the Azores consists of 57 deputies and in the current term there are 25 from the PS, 21 from the PSD, three from the CDS-PP, two from the PPM, two from the BE, one from the Liberal Initiative, one from PAN, one from Chega and an independent deputy (elected by Chega).
