Costa admits to reviewing civil servants’ salaries

The prime minister this Wednesday showed a willingness to review civil servants’ salaries, noting that inflation in 2022 was higher than the government had initially predicted.

“Because we found that there is a change in the assumptions based on which the agreements with the civil service have been signed, [estamos disponíveis] talk to the unions about the income of civil servants,” António Costa declared in the general policy debate, in parliament, in response to the PCP.

The executive leader pointed out that when the civil service salary agreements were signed, inflation was expected to reach 7.4% in 2022.

“We know that the final inflation rate of 2022 was 7.8% and so we are available for a revision taking into account what the change is with regard to wages,” he stressed.

The Prime Minister also announced that, as part of his government’s policy to respond to rising inflation, his government will also announce a “kind of support measure for the most vulnerable families”.

António Costa guaranteed that his government will ensure that these measures are completed “next week”.

“We are waiting for the end of this week to confirm the outcome of last year’s budget execution so that we can adopt [estes] two kinds of measures,” he said.
