Costa: Portugal will break successive investment records in the coming years

The prime minister said on Wednesday that Portugal will successively set new investment records in the coming years, in a speech highlighting the strategic importance of the Sines industrial and logistics area.

António Costa spoke at the end of a session about the expansion project for the industrial complex of Sines, with two new industrial units by Repsol Polímeros — an investment in this first phase of 657 million euros.

“By June 2025, these factories will be producing and exporting the polymers”declared the leader of the executive after hearing the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, of Infrastructure, João Galamba, of Economy, António Costa Silva, and of Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, as well as the Ambassador of Spain.

The prime minister later stressed that “this is the largest industrial investment in the last decade”.

“A new record was reached last year and we are on track to achieve successive investment records in the coming years. We cannot be satisfied with the investment already made, we must keep working so that the investment potential can continue”he claimed.

During this session, part of the first of two days of the “Government + Next” initiative dedicated to the district of Setúbal, António Costa emphasized that the port of Sines is “one of the largest in Europe and certainly the one with the best location for all traffic in the South Atlantic, on the Cape route and with convergences with the Mediterranean routes”.

“This logistics system is complemented by the new rail line, which will be fully operational early next year and which will enable, for example, Repsol to export what it produces by train to Tarragona and from there to all of Europe. It is of greater importance”to maintain.

According to the prime minister, Sines should be “one of the largest renewable energy production centers”.

“And this is one of the main factors in attracting new industries. And this investment by Repsol is one of the best examples of decarbonisation in the industry. The chemical industry is a big consumer of energy, but Repsol is going to develop a hydrogen project and ensure recyclable and green polymers”he added.
