This year, November 25, it will be “a date of great historical significance for democratic values and for the values that gave rise to the PSD”. That weekend, the PSD holds an extraordinary congress focused solely on reviewing the party’s statutes and “eventually, the program.”
The news was brought forward this Monday by the leader of the party, Luís Montenegro, after a meeting of the Permanent Commission. As he added, the process of internal discussion on this legal revision will start on April 27, with a meeting of the National Council of the PSD. Meanwhile, on May 6, the party begins to celebrate its 50th anniversary (it was founded on May 6, 1974).
“I would urge the Finance Minister and Prime Minister to take a position on the lack of truth in the testimony given by this official to the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry. [o CFO da TAP].”
Nothing is known about an elective congress yet. If it were for the regimental dates it should be July next year (the last one was July 2022 and in the PSD the “legislature” is two years). It would be perfect “timing” to take stock of the European elections (June 2024). And Montenegro has already indicated that it is not prepared to remain in the leadership of the party if the result of the party in these elections is not brilliant.
The electoral goal has already been set by the party leader himself: “We want to vote more than any other party and with that we want to strengthen our representation in the European Parliament.”
And also the internal consequences of the results: “If the results give hope that the PSD wins parliamentary elections – which is why I am here and to be prime minister – then I will continue. If that does not happen, then the Portuguese – and certainly not the PSD militants – telling me what to do, because I know very well what to do”. In other words, “I’ll never be where people don’t want me to be. I’m not one of those people who lose and still want to rule by force. That kind of political attitude isn’t for me.”
Luís Montenegro also took advantage of Monday’s press conference to thank TAP’s financial administrator (CFO, acronym of Finance Director), Gonçalo Pires, for “lying” to parliament (when he stated in the parliamentary committee of inquiry that he had not had any intervention in the process of the departure of Alexandra Reis and the compensation of 500 thousand euros that he received).
“I would like to urge the Finance Minister and the Prime Minister to take a position on the lack of truth in the testimony given by this responsible person in the parliamentary committee of inquiry,” said the leader of the PSD, also in view of the fact that Gonçalo Pires stopped having the “conditions required for the fulfillment of the task” of financial manager of the company. Montenegro noted that the CFO “reports directly to the Finance Minister”, and also believed that this case shows something that “is starting to become very clear: that in recent months there has been little truth in the interventions of the members of the government”.
