PAN holds IX Congress on May 20 in Matosinhos

The IX Congress of People-Animals-Natureza (PAN) will take place on May 20 in Matosinhos, the organizing committee told Lusa, at a time when Inês Sousa Real and Nelson Silva have already announced candidacies for the leadership of the party.

According to the coordinator of the organizing committee of the IX Congress, Marta Correia, the delegates will meet in Escola Básica de Matosinhos, Porto district, and the date and place were unanimously approved at a meeting of the National Political Commission, which took place on Thursday evening .

According to the regulation of the IX Congress of the PAN, candidate lists for the National Political Commission (the broader political governing body) and the respective Global Strategy Motion, must be submitted to the Organizing Committee by April 21 and “composed of 27 effective members and a minimum of 12 alternates.”

“The members of the National Political Commission are elected, under statutory conditions, proportionally, according to the d’Hondt method, from the lists presented, with the exception of the spokesperson, who results from the first candidate on the list with the most votes”, it reads. up in the text.

The regulation states that until May 3 “it is possible to merge applications and then send new lists of candidates with the respective global strategy motions resulting from the merger process”.

April 21 is also the deadline for submitting candidates to the National Judicial Council and for submitting proposals to amend the articles of association.

The sectoral motions must be submitted by 4 May at the latest.

“Once the National Congress is convened, the regional and district assemblies must proceed with the election of the respective delegates between May 6 and May 14, 2023,” the ordinance reads, stating that they can only elect and be elected delegates to Congress. “affiliates and affiliates with regularized quotas up to 72 hours before elections”.

The organizing committee expects to have “about 100 delegates” present at the convention, Marta Correia told Lusa.

Inês de Sousa Real has been spokesman for the PAN since June 2021, was the only candidate for leadership at the last congress and is currently the party’s only deputy in the Assembly of the Republic.

Former deputy Nelson Silva is also a candidate, who has the support of the internal movement. “More PAN, action to innovate”. Nelson Silva wants to broaden the themes that the party should focus on, which he says did not reach the people because of a “round and niche speech”.

The former deputy joined the National Political Commission and the PAN Permanent Political Commission (the party’s most limited body for day-to-day political governance) in this mandate, but resigned in February last year, along with other members, and claimed “internal Democratic suffocation”. .
