Santos Silva will bring to the conference of leaders “serious” incident between Chega and Edite Estrela

The president of the Assembly of the Republic said this Thursday that he will bring to the conference of leaders “a succession of behaviors” in plenary that he says challenge parliamentary rules, including the “particularly serious” incident between Chega and the ‘ Vice President’. Edit Estrela.

As he had done at the end of the parliamentary group meeting, the president of the PS bank, Eurico Brilhante Dias, addressed the table at the start of plenary work to condemn what he described as a “humiliating event” in front of parliament and accusing Chega of insulting all deputies, for the way he addressed the socialist deputy Edite Estrela, Vice President of the Assembly of the Republic and who then led the works.

“Of course I will take this issue to the Leaders’ Conference – and this issue is not this particular episode, which I believe is particularly serious – but it is a sequence of behaviors that our Rules of Procedure and the conditions under which a free political debate and plural can be done, and that has the condition that we are all tough, but respectful to each other,” he defended.

Augusto Santos Silva stressed that “political arguments can be exchanged, but no personal insults”: “It only offends those who cannot give other arguments”.

The president of the parliament praised the way in which the two vice-presidents in office, Edite Estrela (PS) and Adão Silva (PSD), have fulfilled “their very demanding tasks”.

“When a decision or behavior of the ‘vices’ is questioned, it is as if my decision or behavior is questioned”he said.

Santos Silva also quoted the Regulations, recalling that it is the power of the President of the Assembly of the Republic (or the ‘deputies’ when they direct the works) “to maintain order and discipline, as well as the security of the Assembly, being able to request and use the necessary means and to take the measures it sees fit”.

“I will do so if circumstances force me to do so,” the parliament speaker assured.

At issue is the incident that took place during the plenary session on Thursday, during Chega’s political statement, devoted to the issue of agriculture.

In response to a request for clarification, Deputy Pedro Frazão referred to the presence of Brazil’s President, Lula da Silva, in parliament, leading Vice President Edite Estrela, who was leading the work at the time, to interrupt him and ask him to to remain the subject.

Several members of Chega protested – including Rita Matias, vehemently – and Pedro Frazão said that attitude was “a disgrace” and that he did not accept that his speech was conditioned, because he continued to speak at the same time as Edite Estrela. like other deputies on the same bench.

Today, after Brilhante Dias raised the issue in plenary, the leader of Chega, André Ventura, also resorted to the form of interpellation at the table to accuse Edite Estrela, when she presided over the works , “was unable to abstract from the fact that she is a PS deputy” and regretted telling deputy Rita Matias to “be quiet” when she made successive remarks.

“This is a shocking lack of impartiality, an inability to manage work. I never expected to say this, but it is better that the President of the Assembly of the Republic is never absent,” he said, adding that Chega was alone “national law”.

In the reply, the PS parliamentary leader accused Chega members of not seeing themselves “in democracy, in this parliament and in the Statute of Deputies”.

“You can threaten all you want, but they won’t shut us up, learn from this,” Ventura replied.
