The President of the Republic today welcomed the agreement between the government and the PSD regarding the decision method on the new airport solution for the Lisbon region, as “it is good news”. In response to questions from reporters in San Diego, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated that he hopes to complete his term in March 2026, “with the joy of seeing not only a location chosen, not only work on the airport started, but even perhaps a temporary solution, if not the final one, in March”.
The head of state said Friday’s meeting between the Prime Minister, António Costa, and the PSD chairman, Luís Montenegro, has even allowed for “differences so far” regarding the location “on the basis of the environmental assessment study, but also the consideration of all that has already been studied”.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled that he has “long-standing” called for political dialogue on this issue, arguing that “the parties that have greater weight in parliament have an enormous responsibility to set an example of understanding to be”.
“It is fundamental because the airport will not be for this government, but for the country and therefore for this government, for government after this government, for government after government after this government.”he added.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke during a meeting with Portuguese emigrants and Portuguese descendants in San Diego, California, the first point of a five-day visit to the west coast of the United States of America.
