Luís Montenegro sharply criticized the Prime Minister’s performance in managing the case involving João Galamba and reiterated his willingness to rule Portugal.
“The absolute majority was completely shattered. The government has lost its way through its sole fault. Whatever the outcome of this crisis, the Prime Minister had the swan song yesterday, after attempting a flight forward in an attempt to provoke elections. Yesterday, the Prime Minister and the Minister showed that they did not know how to take political responsibility. The Minister has only one dignified way out: to insist on his resignation. If he does not, it will only mean that it was pure fiction. “The minister and prime minister toasted the country with two episodes of a soap opera. We learned that everything that goes wrong in the country is the fault of the advisors. Who elects the advisers and the ministers who elect the advisers? Everything comes down to the responsibility of the consultants”began the PSD leader at party headquarters in Lisbon.
Montenegro accused the government of “engaging in partisan warfare” and the prime minister of having “no willingness or desire to rule”.
“Portugal needs bold leadership, hope, future and values. Portugal doesn’t need this lightness or this lack of principles or this game that the prime minister plays with a selfish pleasure. Portugal. With me and the PSD you get a different government.” and Prime Minister”continued Montenegro.
On Costa’s decision not to accept Galamba’s resignation, the opposition leader says it was not courage, but rather “hidden weakness”. “This political theater was premeditated and prepared for the first opportunity,” he stressed.
“It will not be because of me that there will be elections, but we are ready to rule Portugal. Yes, we have a team and we have a project. Portugal has less and less time to lose,” he added.
When questioned by journalists, Montenegro rejected the possibility that António Costa and the PS would benefit in the event of an early election. “The offender will be punished at the polls on whatever day the elections are held. The factor of instability today is António Costa and the PS. It is mandatory for the largest opposition party to denounce the strategy of the PS. The country can count on our alternative and our efforts and our project to give Portugal a new government”, I emphasize, assuring that “he will not interfere in the work of the President of the Republic”, but that “in Portugal an alternative is for this chaotic government”
