Reply to Montenegro. PS accuses PSD leader of wanting to rewrite history

This Saturday, the deputy secretary-general of the PS accused the chairman of the PSD of wanting to rewrite history, whitewashing government measures to combat inflation and adopting a “childish” speech on pension policy.

This criticism was voiced by João Torres in response to statements made this afternoon by Luís Montenegro, in Coimbra, during the PSD’s 49th anniversary celebrations, when he stated that Portugal is currently losing more quality of life and well-being than between 2011 and 2015, a period when the Social Democrats ruled in coalition with the CDS-PP.

“With incredible conditioning [assistência financeira externa]we did it [entre 2011 e 2015]not to lose as much quality of life and well-being as in recent years despite all this,” the Social Democratic leader insisted.

However, for João Torres, this discourse is “detached from the realities of the past, present and future”, and rather represents “an attempt to rewrite history, telling a condensed history of governments since April 25, 1974”.

“The story told by Luís Montenegro certainly shames those who have witnessed many of the conditions in democratic Portugal since the Carnation Revolution, especially when it comes to the episodes of external financial aid, where the truth is objectively lacking. Portugal’s compliance with the then European Economic Community (EEC), forgot the crucial role of the PS in the accession process”, he told the Lusa news agency.

The “number two” of the socialist leadership also criticized the PSD chairman for “trying to whitewash the results of governance and measures to respond to inflation”.

“It has been more than a week since it was announced that Portugal was the country in the Eurozone that grew the most in the first quarter of this year and one of the countries that grew homologously, but Luís Montenegro continues to talk about impoverishment. was time to comment on these economic results, but does not because he wants to hide the good results of the board,” he considered.

The deputy general secretary of the PS also accused the leader of the PSD of “whitewashing the measures taken by the government in response to inflation”.

“She even does, sometimes in an absolutely childish way. The most paradigmatic case of this childish opposition concerns pensions, an issue on which I said the government was in an election campaign. The reality permanently contradicts the narrative of the largest opposition party “, he emphasized.

For the deputy secretary-general of the PS, Luís Montenegro’s speech today seemed “a defense and an internal justification of his own vulnerability and inability to see himself as an alternative”.

“It was a speech in which he acknowledged his failure as leader of the opposition. And it’s a pity, because all democrats want a strong and credible opposition. But Luís Montenegro’s opposition has hit the mark,” he added .
