Catarina Martins believes that only “big changes” will bring the legislature to an end

The BE coordinator defends that only “major changes” will bring the legislature to an end and that, if the prime minister does not implement them, “the president of the republic will feel that he will have the support of the people to call early elections write out”.

In an interview with Lusa on the eve of the BE National Convention, in which she will leave the bloc leadership after ten years, Catarina Martins says that, despite the political crisis, it does not seem a “plausible scenario” to hold early elections. just over a year after the last legislatures.

“It is also true that the paralysis of the government is absolutely unsustainable, which is why I say that I think António Costa will have to make big changes. We’ll see if he makes them. If he does, I think the legislator will come to an end”, defends.

Anticipating that these sweeping changes, to be made by the CEO, will not be “necessary along a left path” but rather due to the “credibility of the government”, the still-leader of the BE leaves a warning .

“If you don’t do them, well, after a certain point, if the demotion continues, the president of the republic [Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa] will feel it will have popular support to call early elections,” he warns.

For Catarina Martins, there are currently no conditions for Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to dissolve the Assembly of the Republic, firstly because “there is no popular will for elections” as people want solutions to the current problems they face.

“Having said that, the government also has a huge difficulty: it cannot act with the degree of disrepute it has,” he points out, citing as an example the TAP file, the teachers’ struggle or the problems in the National Health Service ( NSS).

“Galamba is a poisonous minister”

That makes the blogger clear “it is not enough to reform the government”, despite insisting that “João Galamba is a toxic minister”, unable to “even explain what is happening in his office” and that he has all the executive power involved “in an absolutely regrettable situation”.

“The government has a double problem: it has a problem keeping ministers who are toxic and keeping ministers without conditions to be ministers because they don’t have the political tools to act in their area,” he summed up. on.

According to Catarina Martins’ analysis, it is not enough to “change the names” of those responsible for the portfolios, but rather “a political direction that is understood”.

“There is a point when this game of government with a speech on the left and a political action on the right, which can come in handy in an election campaign, makes it impossible for any minister to act in the daily administration. No one understands what they talk about. No one understands what they want to do”, criticizes.

Regarding the highly critical speech from the executive last weekend by former President of the Republic Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the blogista believes that “very harsh words about this government may even be justified”.

“But I would also like to say that listening to Cavaco Silva I cannot forget that it was from his Council of Ministers that the BPN administration emerged, one of the greatest cases of financial gangsterism in our country and that is why it is difficult for me to listen to Cavaco Silva as someone who can teach lessons with great responsibility for the board,” he condemns.

The country, according to Catarina Martins, “was an eraser about what Cavaco Silva’s governments and his actions were”. “Personally, I don’t fit,” he shoots.

In addition to the former head of state’s “problem of political coherence”, there is another problem for which the right is “very pleased with a strong speech by Cavaco Silva, I think I realize that his protagonists are very vulnerable today”.
