Montenegro: “Government has lost political authority”

“I believe that our political alternative is increasingly welcomed by the Portuguese people, by the voters,” Luís Montenegro, who was elected president of the PSD a year ago, said Monday.

In an interview with RTP, Montenegro said he was not satisfied but was “very confident” that the path the PSD is taking will bring results.

He said the government, which had an absolute majority, was “not functioning” and was embroiled in “permanent controversies, losing political authority” and unable to intervene in people’s lives in a positive way.

He pointed out that the party is growing, but guaranteed “I’m not interested in winning polls, I’m interested in winning elections”.

“The country realizes that the only viable alternative is to be able to give a new government, new policies, more ambition, more hope, to try to give security to our pensioners, to try to give hope to our young people, people is led by the PSD,” stated.

Montenegro noted that the option of the Portuguese people to give the PS a majority now equates to “a great disappointment and disappointment”.
