The Deputy Director General of Health, Rui Portugal, has resigned. He was the only candidate to replace Graça Freitas, who declared in December that he does not intend to be reappointed and is awaiting replacement.
In a statement quoted by Lusa, the Ministry of Health is grateful for Rui Portugal’s work.
“The Ministry of Health thanks Rui Portugal for all his dedication to public health, namely during the demanding period of the pandemic,” said the office of Minister Manuel Pizarro, without stating the reason for the dismissal.
Rui Portugal, graduated in medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1987, is also a public health specialist and was coordinator of the Regional Intervention Agency for the fight against covid-19 in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.
Among the various positions he held, he was Executive Director of the National Health Plan 2012-2017, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Regional Administration of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, Administrator of the Hospital de Pulido Valente and University Professor in the field of health .
In an interview with the Público newspaper in February, the Deputy Director General of Health, Rui Portugal, expressed his willingness to apply to CREeSAP.
“I have a curriculum, local, regional, national and international experience with which I (…) I think I can make a very important contribution, both in the speech and in the agenda,” he said.
