PS postpones congress to the first months of 2024

This Saturday, the PS postponed the holding of its next National Congress – originally scheduled for September – to the first quarter of 2024. Upon entering the National Commission, the request was already expected to be voted on, and it was eventually approved. This despite the fact that the mandate of the current Secretary General, António Costa, expires at the end of August.

The intention of the postponement is to adjust “according to election cycles”., something that, according to a socialist source speaking to Lusa at the entrance to this Saturday’s meeting of the National Commission, is “expressly” allowed by the statutes. “Even if Congress were to be held for September next year, we would have to adjust that calendar within two years, because in September 2025 we are a few weeks away from the municipal elections,” this source claimed.

That is, if the congress is confirmed to be held in the first half of 2024, the decision on possible successors to António Costa will come a few months before the 2026 legislature.as the mandates last for two years – this when the legislature is completed in its entirety.

On the other hand, by taking place at that time, the congress will serve to define strategies and prepare the campaign for the Europeans, which will take place on July 9.

This calendar is contested by the internal opposition, led by Daniel Adrião.
