Portugal’s Livre party was elected as a member of the European Greens, in a vote that took place in Vienna on Saturday, which also saw People-Animals-Natureza (PAN) join as an associate member.
The officially confirmed membership of the two Portuguese parties was voted on at the 37th Congress of the European Green Party, which ended in Vienna on Saturday.
In a statement, the Free Party explains that 89.7% of European Greens voted in favour, 6% abstained and 4.3% voted against.
“In Portugal, Livre will be the only full member of the European Green Party with an autonomous strategy, running only at elections and defending, like the Greens, European integration and the democratization of the European project”, refers to the party.
On the social network Twitter, the deputy and PAN spokesperson also welcomed her joining the European Greens, with associate member status, with 91.7% of the vote in favour, 3.3% against and 5% abstentions.
“A progressive Europe is a green Europe, which now also incorporates the animal cause into its DNA,” wrote Inês Sousa-Real.
Until now, the European Green Party had only one Portuguese political force: the Ecologists’ Party “Os Verdes” (PEV), which lost its representation in the Assembly of the Republic in 2022.
