After heated debates, Liots withdraw their bill to repeal pension reform

Game over for the proposal to cancel retirement at 64: Liot’s group of deputies, deprived of a vote, was reduced to withdrawing its text on Thursday, after a feverish session where the opposition accused the presidential camp of “denial of the democracy”

This repeal proposal had ignited the flame of opponents of the pension reform despite its promulgation in mid-April. But this text carried out by the independent group Liot had been emptied of its flagship measure by the majority.

“There is nothing left in the text except obviously the amendments of the presidential minority. In responsibility, we have decided to withdraw our text,” said the head of the group Bertrand Pancher, denouncing “the powerful attacks against Parliament.”

Courson worries about “anger and violence”

“We are not going to make a fool of ourselves by continuing the debate,” he said angrily, after more than two hours of eruptive exchanges but without the slightest vote.

Target of the wrath of the oppositions: the president of the Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, on Wednesday blocked the examination of the repealing measure, considered unconstitutional because it creates a burden on public finances. This decision is unprecedented in the history of the V Republic.

“From this reduction of Parliament can only arise disinterest in our institutions and, in the worst case, anger and violence,” warned Charles de Courson (Liot group) at the podium.

Braun-Pivet, target of strong criticism

For his part, Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt pointed to a proposal from his “almost nihilistic” and “empty” group.

In a hectic chamber, the session had started with a series of points of order addressed to Yaël Braun-Pivet.

“They are damaging, they are crushing parliamentary democracy,” thundered the head of the communist deputies André Chassaigne.

The chairman of the Finance Committee, Eric Coquerel, set “political and partisan decisions, by order of the executive.”

But, replied Éric Woerth in the presidential field, “the constitutional boo sought by Liot and LFI, that is the real attack on democracy.”

From the perch, Ms. Braun-Pivet, from macronist ranks, justified herself on several occasions: “the Constitution, nothing more than the Constitution, that is my role.”

A motion of no confidence next week

The measure to return the legal retirement age to 62 was first torpedoed in committee during a close vote, then reintroduced through amendments.

The left and Liot had good hopes of turning the tide in the chamber. But “to the anger, the concern, the incomprehension that we, the deputies, tried to convey here, you responded with the passage in force”, still accused Bertrand Pancher, leader of the deputies Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (Liot) , brandishing a Constitution.

Even adopted by the Assembly, the repeal proposal would have had little chance of success at the legislative level, macronistas have consistently argued. While he worries about the political signal that a victory for the oppositions would have sent.

With the end of this parliamentary sequence, two days after day 14 of social mobilization whose participation was the lowest recorded in five months of demonstrations, the executive hopes to be able to turn the page on pension matters. A motion of no confidence presented by Nupes will be considered at the beginning of next week.
