Knife attack in Annecy: Elisabeth Borne denounces “an atrocious and indescribable act”

The Prime Minister went to Haute-Savoie this Thursday afternoon, a few hours after the knife attack on children and adults by a Syrian refugee around Lake Annecy.

A suspect has been arrested by the police, he is a Syrian refugee in regular situation. Elisabeth Borne, who came accompanied by her Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, showed her emotion during a press conference organized in the middle of the afternoon with the prosecutor.

“We are shocked by this heinous and indescribable act. When it affects children, it affects us to the depths of ourselves,” the prime minister said, lamenting that “little children” were “brutally and savagely attacked.”

“The whole country in shock”

The alleged perpetrator, who targeted children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years and two adults, including a 78-year-old man, was born in 1991. He is a Syrian national and is in a regular situation. Abdalmasih H. lived for ten years in Sweden, where he was granted refugee status.

“Today, the whole country is in shock. My first thoughts go to the parents and children who are still in serious condition and to the adults who were also injured,” explained the Matignon tenant. .

Elisabeth Borne also wanted to “thank the actions of the police who have been able to arrest this author very quickly” before “thanking the emergency services and the caregivers who have cared for the injured”.

“The Time of Excitement”

Abdalmasih H. was wearing a Christian cross when he was arrested. In his application to Ofpra, he introduced himself as a “Christian from Syria”, according to a police source.

Asked about the comments of a part of the right and the extreme right that attack the profile of the suspect, the head of government judged that the country is “currently at the moment of emotion”.

The Annecy prosecutor argued at the press conference with Elisabeth Borne that there was no “apparent terrorist motive.”
