The NBA announced Friday that it has issued a 25-game ban on Ja Morant, a 23-year-old player who posted videos on social media showing weapons.
The athlete’s suspension from the Memphis Grizzlies is effective immediately and the player is also unable to participate in any public league or team event, including preseason games.
This is already the second time that the player has been suspended in the last three months for displaying firearms on social networks: in March, the sanction was eight games.
Ja Morant says she has had “time to reflect and realize the damage” she has caused. “I want to apologize to the NBA, the Grizzlies, my teammates and the city of Memphis… During the holidays and my suspension I will continue to work on my mental health and decision-making,” she read herself in a statement.
The player also promises to “prove in training” that he will be “ready to return to the field” when the punishment is over and hopes to have “the opportunity to show, over time”, that he is “a better man”.
On May 13, Morant was shown in possession of firearms, inside a car, during a live broadcast on social media, less than two months after the first suspension.
On March 4, he displayed a firearm while intoxicated at a nightlife in Denver.
Temetrius Jamel “Ja” Morant is one of the most promising youngsters in the NBA, having entered the league with the No. 2 pick in the 2019 Draft.
