This Monday begins the first edition of the NBA summer school. There are already 60 young people registered who will be able to learn the methods of the North American Basketball League. TO TSFthe technical director of this school, Nuno Tavares, explained how the opportunity to bring this program to Portugal arose.
“This opportunity arose to be able to work with the NBA and to be able to develop a new product that the NBA has in the world and which is called NBA Basketballs Schools, which are a basketball development network open to all players from both countries. genders, between 6 and 18 years old. In this regard, we have been negotiating with the NBA for a few months, which ended with the signing of a four-year contract to develop, for the first time, and open the NBA Basketball School. , which has, on the one hand, these NBA campuses in the summer and other times of the year and then, later on, the full year program that we will start in September 2024”, explained Nuno Tavares.
In a first phase, Porto and Lisbon are the cities that will host this NBA Basketball School.
“The first year we will focus on the two largest cities in Portugal, that is, Lisbon and Porto, and we will do the first event in Porto, from July 3 to 7, and then the following week, from 10 to 14… and we will do it in Lisbon. Then we repeat it in a different format, a preseason format. In this case from August 28 to September 1 in Porto and then from September 4 to 8 in Lisbon,” he said. The official believes that, with the knowledge of the NBA method, many young people can dream of reaching the main basketball league in the world.
“When we talk about a highly competitive or high performance sport, there are many characteristics that sometimes escape us, starting with the physical issue, because we are talking about athletes with certain characteristics. The important thing in this approach to the NBA and in this approach, the NBA Basketball School is really about bringing to Portugal what the NBA calls the NBA method, which is a structured method in an environment focused on the development of technique and also in the promotion of positive values such as integrity, work, teamwork, respect, determination, etc. And if we have this base and we have a very large number of players working in this NBA method, we will surely find talent and then those talents will be developed to take the next step, ”he added.
The NBA Basketball School starts this Monday in Porto and arrives in Lisbon in the second week of July.
