Liverpool disappointed again in the English Football League on Saturday when they conceded a draw at home with Brighton, leaving them 11 points behind leaders Arsenal in ninth place in the championship.
After Arsenal started the day with a 3-1 victory over Tottenham in the North London derby, the eighth league game put pressure on the other title contenders, such as Liverpool, who drew (3-3) with Brighton, and Chelsea, who only beat Crystal Palace in added time (2-1).
The Manchester derby is only played on Sunday, being able to replace the citizens at one point from Arsenal.
Portuguese coach Marco Silva continues to have an irregular season at Fulham, alternating between the very good and the disappointing, as is the case with the 4-1 win at home against Newcastle, although playing with 10 from the eighth minute.
At Anfield, a hat trick Belgian Leandro Trossard allowed Brighton to score a point against Jürgen Klopp’s powerful team, today with Portuguese Diogo Jota (disputed in the last quarter of an hour) and Fábio Carvalho (substituted at half-time) in action.
Trossard scored in the 4th and 17th minutes, and the result came very quickly to an unexpected 2-0 for the visitors.
Liverpool reacted and made it 3-2 on the scoreboard, thanks to a ‘bis’ from the Brazilian Roberto Firmino, in the 33rd and 54th minutes, and an own goal from Adam Webster, in the 63rd.
Brighton did not give up and, in the 83rd minute, Trossard fired again out of goalkeeper Alisson’s reach, making it 3-3.
Chelsea didn’t have a quiet afternoon either, on the short trip to Crystal Palace’s ground, but secured all three points, with Conor Gallagher’s (who was at Crystal Palace last season) goal in the 90th minute.
Previously, the French Édouard had put Crystal Palace ahead, in the seventh minute, and the Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang restored the tie, in the 38th minute.
Chelsea are fifth, with 13 points, eight behind Arsenal, but they have one game in hand and if they win they will move up to fourth place, behind Arsenal, City (17 points) and Tottenham (17). The current fourth is Brighton, who also have a pending game and add 14 points.
Marco Silva, who is in his second season with Fulham as manager, is alternating the excellent, against top teams, with the disappointing, as is the case with this 4-1 home loss to Newcastle.
It soon became known that Fulham (now without Palhinha, who is suspended) were not going to have an easy life, playing with just 10 players after eight minutes, with Chalobah being sent off.
Callum Wilson (11), Paraguayan Miguel Almiron (33 and 57), Sean Longstaff (43) scored the goals for the ‘magpies’, to which Fulham only responded very late, in minute 88, with a goal from Jamaican Bobby De Cordova-Reid.
In today’s other matches, Bournemouth and Brentford drew goalless and Everton won 2-1 at Southampton.
To complete the day, Bruno Lage’s Wolverhampton plays West Ham in London.
