The President of the Republic congratulated this Sunday the Portuguese women’s soccer team for the “technical quality and determination” in its World Cup debut, showing his conviction that, despite the defeat, it will be possible to turn the “impossible into possible” in the next two games.
“The President of the Republic spoke with coach Frederico Neto, shortly after finishing Portugal’s challenge against the Dutch team – runner-up in the world -, congratulating the technical quality and determination of our women’s soccer team, in a debut in the final phase”, can be read in a note published on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
According to the same note, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his conviction that it is still within the reach of the women’s soccer team “to turn what, for many, was impossible into possible in the next two games.”
Present in New Zealand to witness the game was the Prime Minister, António Costa, who stressed at the end of the game that the attitude of this team is “an example”, despite the defeat.
“He is a good example for all of us. In the face of adversity, what we can do is fight and, when things are not going well, it is to turn around and move on”, said the head of the Portuguese Government, at the end of the meeting, in the mixed zone of the Dunedin stadium, in New Zealand.
The Portuguese women’s soccer team lost this Sunday 1-0 to the Netherlands, in their absolute debut in a World Cup, in a match on the first day of Group E, in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The team led by Francisco Neto will play again on Thursday, against Vietnam, in Hamilton, at 7:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. in Lisbon), closing Group E against the United States, in Auckland, on August 1, at 7:00 p.m. (8:00 a.m.).
