Sporting makes Morten Hjulmand official until 2028

Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand is Sporting’s most recent signing, having signed a five-year contract, announced this Sunday by the First League club, which paid 18 million euros (EM) to Lecce.

“Sporting Clube de Portugal — Futebol, SAD informs (…) that it has reached an agreement with Unione Sportiva Lecce SpA (hereinafter Lecce) regarding the definitive acquisition of the sports rights of the player Morten Hjulmand, for an amount of 18,000 000.00 euros (eighteen million euros), to which can be added up to 3,000,000.00 euros (three million euros) conditioned on the achievement of individual and collective objectives”, reported the SAD ‘leonina’, in a statement sent to the Securities Market Commission (CMVM).

In the same note, Sporting refers that the player signed a contract valid until June 2028, which includes a termination clause of 80 ME, and adds that “the value of the solidarity mechanism due to third-party clubs will be borne by Sporting SAD “.

Hjulmand, 24, thus becomes the second most expensive signing in the history of the Alvalade shield, being only surpassed by the Swede Viktor Gyökeres, who was rescued from English Coventry in this market, for 20 ME.

He is the second Danish player to wear the ‘Leonese’ emblem shirt, two decades after goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel represented the club, between 1999 and 2001.

The defensive midfielder was trained in Copenhagen, heading to Austria to play for Admira Wacker in 2018, before being signed by Lecce, in January 2021, for 170,000 euros, when the transalpine team was still in Serie B, the second division.

Since then, he has made 95 appearances and helped the southern Italian club to promotion to Serie A in 2022, and was promoted to team captain last season.

The Danish midfielder is the second reinforcement secured by Sporting for the 2023/24 season, after striker Viktor Gyökeres.
