Pichardo misses the Athletics World Cup due to injury and will not be able to defend the title

The Portuguese athlete Pedro Pablo Pichardo will not be able to defend the gold medal won at the 2022 Oregon World Cup due to injury.

The Olympic, world and European triple jump champion “was forced to abandon the fight for the world title, in Budapest, at the World Athletics Championships, which takes place between August 19 and 27”, reports the Portuguese Federation of Athletics (FPA).

“The athlete left today [quinta-feira] with the national delegation, but during the trip, which has been problematic for all the teams due to flight delays, he again felt the symptoms of low back pain, an injury that prevented him from participating this season in the European Team Championships, in the National Club Championships and in the Portuguese Championships”, explains the federation.

The athlete “was examined and evaluated by the medical team that accompanies the national team to these World Cups and was advised not to participate in the competition.”

“The situation has already been communicated to World Athletics by the team leader of the national delegation, the vice president of the FPA, Fernando Tavares. With this absence, the national triple jump will be represented by the athlete Tiago Luís Pereira”, refers the FPA.
