The Portuguese pilot Miguel Oliveira (Aprilia) was run over this Saturday by the Italian Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati) in the first corner of the sprint race of the MotoGP Austrian Grand Prix, being forced to abandon.
The race was won by Italian Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati), World Championship leader, who overtook South African Brad Binder (KTM) by 2.056 seconds, with Spaniard Jorge Martin (Ducati) third, 5.045 seconds behind.
Leaving pole position, Bagnaia had to control the KTM of Brad Binder, who today renewed his contract with the Austrian brand until 2026, and the Australian Jack Miller, but he led from the first to the last lap.
Miguel Oliveira started from eighth position on the grid, between the Italian Marco Bezzecchi and the French Fábio Quartararo (Yamaha).
In the first corner, the Frenchman was squeezed by the Spanish Jorge Martín, he touched the also Spanish Maverick Viñales (Aprilia) who, in turn, hit Bezzecchi, who ended up throwing Oliveira into the gravel.
Johann Zarco (Ducati) and Enea Bastianini (Ducati) were also involved in the incident, but only the Portuguese and Bezzecchi retired on the first lap.
This time, however, and contrary to what happened in Portimão and Jerez de la Frontera, without physical consequences for the Portuguese rider.
In any case, this was the Portuguese’s 16th retirement in MotoGP, half of them caused by opponents.
With these results, Francesco Bagnaia now has 226 points, compared to Jorge Martín’s 180, who is second, while Miguel Oliveira maintains fifth place, with 40 points.
On Sunday the main race takes place.
