The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) urgently convened an extraordinary General Assembly (AG) this Wednesday, to be held on Friday, after the controversy after the conquest of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
It is about a kiss on the mouth of Luis Rubiales, president of the RFEF, to the player Jenni Hermoso during the celebrations of the unprecedented conquest by Spain of a Women’s Soccer World Cup, a situation that the player devalued, but that continues being highly criticized by members of the Spanish government, even going so far as to address the situation in public by the head of government, Pedro Sánchez.
The extraordinary GA takes place at the federation headquarters, in the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rosas, Madrid, and is expressly called for what happened in Sydney: “From the latest events that occurred during the awards ceremony (… ) We want to inform you that the internal procedures of the Federation in terms of integrity are open, as well as the rest of the applicable protocols, “says today’s statement.
The Extraordinary General Assembly starts at 12:00 local time and follows the request made by the regional Spanish football associations, which met urgently today and expressed their full support for Luis Rubiales.
Pedro Sánchez has today considered the justifications presented by Rubiales “insufficient”, stating: “What we saw was an unacceptable gesture. The apologies presented by Mr. Rubiales are insufficient. I even believe that they are inadequate and, therefore, we must go further ” .
In a video posted on social networks, Luis Rubiales regretted what happened and assured that it was an “act without bad intentions and without bad faith.”
In statements released by the RFEF, Hermoso explained that it was a “completely spontaneous mutual gesture for the immense joy of winning a World Cup.” “The president and I have a great relationship. His behavior with all of us was perfect and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude,” Hermoso reinforced.
However, the Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, called for Rubiales’ resignation, considering the leader’s behavior “unacceptable”.
