The UN regrets the persistence of “machismo” in sports after Rubiales’ kiss

“Sexism” persists in sport, lamented the UN on Monday, which asked the Spanish authorities to respond to the forced kiss of the president of the Spanish Football Federation to the player Jenni Hermoso with “respect for the rights of all athletes”.

“How difficult is it not to kiss someone on the lips?” asked Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary general, when asked about Luis Rubiales’ forced kiss, sparking a wave of outrage.

In his daily press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, Stéphane Dujarric was peremptory on this case: “There is a crucial problem of sexism that persists in sport and we hope that the Spanish authorities and the Spanish Government will address [este caso] in a way that respects the rights of all athletes.”

The Spanish justice system announced on Monday the opening of a preliminary investigation for “sexual assault” after the forced kiss of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, to the world champion Jenni Hermoso.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, “investigative measures” are open and the possibility of a complaint by Hermoso for sexual assault is open, given that the kiss on the mouth, when they handed over the medals for winning the Women’s World Cup, in Australia “did not was consented.”

Rubiales was, however, suspended by FIFA, in the last ‘domino’ of consequences that surrounded the event of August 20, when, at the end of the match that consecrated Spain the world champion of women’s football, in Sydney, in the After the award ceremony, Luis Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the mouth while they were celebrating.

Numerous criticisms of what happened followed, with the player stating that she had not consented to the kiss, after a first version said that everything had happened at a time of greater euphoria.

After several days of much criticism from various sectors of society, the RFEF held an Extraordinary General Assembly this Friday in which the resignation of Rubiales was expected, who, however, guaranteed, on more than one occasion, that he would not resign. in charge.

A new peak of response and extreme positions followed, with the players of the national team announcing that they were not available to represent Spain again, while the current leaders of the RFEF remain in their positions.

On Saturday, FIFA announced Rubiales’ suspension from office for 90 days, and 11 members of coach Jorge Vila’s coaching staff submitted their resignations. For his part, the coach condemned the “inadequate behavior” of the president of the RFEF and the Spanish Government announced a complaint before the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD).

If the court considers that the infractions are “very serious”, then the Superior Sports Council will convene its executive commission to initiate the suspension of Rubiales.
