Liga is asking for a trial to investigate the reasons for the failure of the VAR system

Liga Portugal will ask the disciplinary board of the Portuguese Football Federation to set up an investigation process to determine the reasons that caused the malfunction of the VAR system at Estádio do Dragão during FC Porto-Arouca next Sunday, in order to “establish responsibility for what happened”.

The entity supervising professional football in Portugal explains that it has decided to request the initiation of the process following the explanation of the Arbitration Board and the “facts described in the report of the Liga Portugal delegates designated for the match “.

The Arbitration Council (CA) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Monday that the video refereeing system of Estádio do Dragão, in Porto, was without power for fourteen minutes at FC Porto-Arouca, of the fourth round of the I Liga. and reserve support had been exhausted.

The FPF CA reported on the technical information on the use of the mobile phone by referee Miguel Nogueira, to assess a possible penalty shot against the Iranian Mehdi Taremi, who pointed out that he had reversed the decision, without the images of the bid that took place after 90+6 minutes.

The CA confirmed the communication and video failure in the referee’s assessment area (RRA), in the 87th minute of the game played on Sunday, in the blue and white venue, and the appeal, in light of this failure, to “mobile equipment — available in all stadiums — to communicate with the Video Referees Center, in Cidade no Futebol”.

“By analyzing the incident, the technicians concluded that the only available electrical outlet in the stadium repair room had no electrical power and that during the course of the game the emergency power system – also known as UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) – failed. up,” the statement read.

According to the same source, “this outlet does not have a backup or auxiliary power supply,” and as a result of the power outage, “the process of replacing the equipment to the second backup power system (UPS) was initiated, with service fully restored to minute 101”.

Despite the 14-minute blackout in the referee’s assessment room, on the pitch, “the technical solution that connects Cidade do Futebol to Estádio do Dragão has not registered a single failure,” assured the CA, who assured that the VAR that in the I Liga “uses certified technology used in various international competitions”.

“VAR was introduced in Portugal in May 2017 and the uptime without service interruptions is 99.8%,” underlines the CA.

Without access to the footage, referee Miguel Nogueira addressed the coaches of the two teams to announce the decision to overturn the said penalty, an action immediately after the match disputed by FC Porto, who protested the match.

“FC Porto has lodged a protest with the League delegates in view of the cancellation of the duel with Arouca. This measure is based on the action of the referee at the time of the reversal, after a telephone conversation and without access to the images of the penalty kick bid awarded by the field referee for violation of Mehdi Taremi,” FC Porto said in a statement.

In the same sense, the blue and white believe that the referee of the match, Miguel Nogueira, has committed a “violation of the rules of the game”.

“Miguel Nogueira’s action constitutes a violation of the Laws and an error of law with a potentially serious impact on the outcome of the game,” the club concluded.

After this episode, the dragons would again receive another maximum penalty, which Galeno wasted, at 90+15 minutes, before Evanilson completed the 1-1 draw, at 90+19, after Cristo González Arouca advanced, at 84.
