A supporter of football club Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata was killed on Thursday in clashes during an Argentina league game between his team and Boca Juniors, local authorities said.
“I confirm that there is one death. This person died of cardiac arrest”said the Security Minister of the Province of Buenos Aires, Sergio Berni.
The hospital where the victim was admitted said it was a 57-year-old man who died of cardiac arrest.
The clashes started outside the Juan Carmelo Zerillo stadium in La Plata, about 50 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, where Gimnasia played Boca Juniors.
Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse supporters trying to break into the already sold-out stadium.
“The incidents started outside and spread in. There were about ten thousand people around the stadium trying to get in, some with tickets, some without tickets. Everyone could see that the stadium was very full.”said Eduardo Aparício, the head of the organization for the prevention of violence in sport.
“This is all being investigated.”especially “the performance of the police,” he added.
