Former Benfica striker Claudio Caniggia was arrested in Argentina on Thursday on charges of aggravated sexual abuse against his ex-wife, Mariana Nannis.
According to the Argentine press, the 56-year-old former Argentina international will be tried by the National Criminal Court, with judges Mariano Scotto and Juan Cicciaro confirming the upholding of the seizure of almost 13,500 euros (5 million pesos) from the former Argentina international. athlete, a measure issued more than two months ago by investigating judge Fabiana Palmaghini, at the request of Caniggia’s ex-wife.

Claudio Caniggia was one of the great figures of the Argentina team in the 1990s, shining alongside Diego Maradona. In the 1994/95 season he represented Benfica on loan from AS Roma, having also represented River Plate, Hellas Verona, Atalanta, Boca Juniors, Dundee FC, Rangers and Qatar SC, from which he retired in 2004.
