Jorge Fonseca enters the third round of the Judo World Cup

Jorge Fonseca, the world number 1 in the -100kg category, advanced to the third round of the world championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Tuesday.

After six and a half minutes, she defeated the Romanian of Cuban origin, Ashley González, by points. Serbia’s Bojan Dosen is the next opponent, later this Tuesday.

González is a former -90 kg champion, who in 2021 left Cuba for Romania, beginning to compete at the top weight.

Also for Cuba, Asley González was world champion in 2013 and bronze medal in 2011, still in the previous weight, and in the London 2012 Olympic Games he was runner-up, in the period in which he obtained the best results.

Fonseca has already recognized that the World Cups are one of the competitions that he likes to play the most, but he discards the pressure of defending a title and in his case two in a row, after in 2019 he became the first Portuguese judoka to be world champion .

In the World Championships, which are being held since Thursday, Portugal has already had six of the eight registered judokas in action, in a ‘campaign’ in which the bronze medal of Bárbara Timo stands out, in -63 kg.
