Brazilian Neymar has a serious injury and faces a long layoff

Brazilian striker Neymar has suffered a serious injury to his left knee and will require surgery, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF), before returning to the pitch until next year.

According to the organization, the player of Al Hilal, a Saudi Arabian team led by the Portuguese Jorge Jesus, has suffered a “rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus of his left knee” after the tests carried out, a situation that will require “surgical intervention at a date yet to be determined.”

Neymar’s injury was sustained on Tuesday evening during Brazil’s match against Uruguay in Montevideo in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup (2-0 defeat against ‘escrete’), with the 31-year-old player having to leave on a stretcher and in visible suffering.

The CBF has not announced the forward’s expected release period, but given the severity of the injury, it is likely that the former Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona and Santos player will be sidelined for at least six months.

Neymar joined Al Hilal from Jesus this season and, like Portuguese international Rúben Neves, scored one goal and two assists in five games for the Saudis.
