“Super happy.” Joaquim Chaves becomes national surf champion for the first time

This Sunday, Joaquim Chaves became national surf champion for the first time, securing a place in the semifinals of the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro, fifth and final stage of the MEO Surf League.

The 20-year-old surfer won the title by qualifying for the semifinals of the event that takes place on Lagido beach, in Peniche, beating his opponent in the dispute for the highest trophy in Portuguese surfing, Guilherme Ribeiro, national champion in 2022. .

“I joined the heat I was a little nervous, I can’t lie, but I handled my emotions well. I made my waves without shaking heat that ended up not having scores very high. But I think I handled priority and wave selection well and that’s what matters. “I’m super happy,” he said.

Joaquim Chaves reaches his first national title in the main category of Portuguese surfing, after several titles as a junior in different categories of the Esperanças National Surf Championship.

“I think the consistency this year in the MEO Surf League has to do with my level of surfing. I evolved like I had never evolved before. Last year I did a lot of traveling, which allowed me to train a lot and that allowed me to reach the stages with much more confident. I have been competing in the MEO Surf League for many years and the experience I have acquired makes me feel more and more comfortable. Now I am going to focus on the preseason, continue going to the gym, without ever losing the rhythm of my routines and focusing on the qualifying circuit to be on the Challenger circuit in 2024,” he defended.
