Pichardo among the 10 finalists for the World Athlete Award 2022

The Portuguese Pedro Pichardo, triple jump world and European champion, is one of the 10 nominees for the 2022 world athlete award, including the Swedish Armand Duplantis, World Athletics announced Thursday.

Pichardo, 29, a native of Cuba, won the gold medal at the World Championships in Eugene, in the United States, with the best world record of the year (17.95 meters), and at the European Championships in Munich, Germany, having also obtained the silver medal at the Indoor World Championships in Belgrade.

The Portuguese athlete, who is also a current Olympic champion, for having won the triple jump event at the Tokyo 2020 Games, was left out of the final list of three nominees for the award for the best European athlete of 2022, in which he appears Duplantis, the Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen and the Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou.

Ingebrigtsen, world champion in the 5,000 meters, runner-up in the 1,500 meters and winner of both distances in the European Championship, is also one of the candidates for the world athletics trophy, unlike Tentoglou, but the favoritism falls on Duplantis and the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge.

The Swede broke the world record three times last year, 6.21 meters outdoors and 6.20 meters indoors, winning all the major titles: world champion in Eugenio and Belgrade and European in Munich.

Kipchoge also improved the marathon world record, which he already held, to 2:01.09 hours, having also won the Belim and Tokyo marathons.

the Slovenian Kristjan Ceh (discus throw), the Brazilian Alison dos Santos (400 meters hurdles), the Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali (3,000 meters hurdles), the Americans Grant Holloway (110 meters hurdles) and Noah Lyles (200 meters hurdles) and Anderson Peters (javelin) from Granada), all world champions, complete the list of candidates.
