FC Porto recalls the extraordinary General Meeting on the deliberation on new statutes

The extraordinary General Meeting (AGM) to deliberate on FC Porto’s new statutes, which had been suspended on Monday and postponed until November 20, was canceled on Saturday due to the withdrawal of the proposal by the Supreme Court.

According to a note signed by the president of the Council of the General Assembly (MAG), José Lourenço Pinto, this recall comes “at the request of the management” of the second place in national football, taking into account the “apparent lack of purpose in debate.

The decision comes two days after a meeting between the members of the Supreme Court, which ‘unanimously’ and in the ‘best interests’ of the ‘blue and white’ club endorsed a motion to reject the proposal for legal revision, which had been submitted by the club prepared to withdraw. Its deliberation would require two-thirds of votes in favor, but this did not even happen during the General Meeting.

In a statement, the consultative body, which is inherently headed by José Lourenço Pinto, said it wants to “soothe the divisions that want to arise within the Porto family.”

The work had been suspended by MAG on Monday and then moved to November 20 at 9 p.m. at the Dragão Arena, after a crowded large meeting with confrontation between the members, who, given the strong attendance, changed location at the last minute and moved from a auditorium at Estádio do Dragão to the club’s pavilion.

The main meeting resumed after 10:30 p.m., but several people left the venue after a short time following arguments in the stands, as evidenced by videos on social media and messages from members who managed to enter.

The following day, FC Porto’s management condemned the disrespect and assured that it “will use the resources at its disposal to identify those responsible for the physical attacks and mobilize the social authorities”, with a view to opening a disciplinary procedure, while the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) has opened an investigation into the incidents noted in the Dragão Arena.

The new statutes replaced April with June as the maximum limit for holding elections for FC Porto’s governing bodies, which will take place in the first half of 2024.

The hypothetical introduction of electronic voting and postal voting, a minimum membership of fifteen years instead of the current ten, to run for president or access to voting rights after two continuous years as a member were other changes under discussion.

The document also advocated the preservation of SAD’s share capital in light of the possible entry of new investors and ensured greater openness for business between the members of the governing bodies and the ‘dragons’, thus safeguarding the club’s ‘clear interests’ .
