The Superliga is “a selfish and elitist model”, the Spanish League accuses

The Spanish Football League (La Liga) opined on Thursday that “the Superliga is a selfish and elitist model”, and that all formats that are not completely open, with direct access, through championships, are “closed” models.

The comment came after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) today found FIFA and UEFA’s decision to ban athletes and clubs from participating in private competitions to be contrary to European law.

The organisation, which did not look specifically at the Super League but at general issues relating to UEFA and FIFA rules, believes that a competition such as the one proposed “should not necessarily be allowed”.

“They are already starting to become intoxicating, as I warned. It has always been possible to organize competitions outside the jurisdiction of UEFA and FIFA, this cannot be prohibited. The issue is the conditions under which they are organized under the organization of UEFA and FIFA fall.”, said Javier Tebas, president of La Liga.

For Javier Tebas, the CJEU decision says that “there must be transparent, clear, objective rules for the approval of competitions” and not that they must allow the Superliga.

“On the contrary, it points out that the criteria for admission to competitions must be transparent, objective and non-discriminatory. Principles are precisely incompatible with the Super League,” he added.

The response from La Liga and Javier Tebas comes after the EU’s highest governing body ruled that UEFA and FIFA were abusing their “dominant position” in their action against the creation of the controversial football super league.

This is a decision that cannot be appealed and must be applied by the Spanish court investigating the case, in response to the complaint filed in April 2022 by the companies managing the sports project – A22 Sports Management and European Super League .

The Superliga project was initiated by 12 European clubs, leaving only Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Juventus.
