Abel Ferreira is one win away from becoming the second Portuguese coach to win the Brazilian championship title. The Palmeiras celebration could take place on the next round of the Brasileirão, scheduled for Wednesday (7:00 p.m.), at home, with a win over Fortaleza.
The Portuguese coach was about to celebrate the title in the early hours of Thursday after beating Athletico Paranaense (3-1) and it just fell through as Internacional de Porto Alegre reversed the result and ended up beating at home to Ceara 2-1. This was on a night when Vítor Pereira’s Corinthians were definitively out of the title fight after losing at home to Fluminense (0-2).
Palmeiras is now 10 points clear of Internacional with four games to go, meaning 12 points up for grabs.
At the same time that Palmeiras will host Fortaleza (11th), Internacional América will visit Mineiro, so a slip through the gauchos will allow Abel Ferreira to party whatever the result he gets in Allianz Parque, in São Paulo.
After Jorge Jesus in the service of Flamengo, in 2019, Abel Ferreira could become the second Portuguese to win the title in Brazil, confirming the great work he has done for Verdão, for which he has already won two Libertadores Cups, a South America Super Cup and a Brazilian Cup. This eventually becomes the title that was missing from the 43-year-old coach’s resume.
