Guilherme Ribeiro is the new national surfing champion and celebrates his first title in the MEO Surf League by beating Vasco Ribeiro in the closing seconds of the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro. The final, in the style of “the winner takes all”, was decided when the previous champion was unable to land the aerial that would give him the triumph. Among the ladies, and without the champion Teresa Bonvalot, it was Maria Salgado, a 15-year-old junior, who won on the beach of Pico da Mota and rose to second place in the ranking.
“Gui” opened the day in the quarterfinals, pushing Francisco Ordonhas and Afonso Antunes away, while Vasco defeated Arran Strong and Miguel Blanco, the latter with a wave that scored at 9.50, the highest score in Peniche. The champion seemed unstoppable and started to lead the final, with 6.50 and 6.25 points (12.72), but 12 minutes before the end the turnaround took place: with 7.25, to join the 7.00 that was already there, Guilherme went on his way to the title, with 14.75. His rival still scored 7.90, but in the closing seconds he was unsuccessful in the air allowing him to recover the remaining 0.35 points.
“I’ve been thinking about this since the Azores. I won with my friends and family all here. It’s the best year of my life. I went into the final thinking it was all or nothing. I wanted the win stage and it worked. , but I went with the guts and the race, it turned out to be a super heat,” said the new national champion, the first for Costa de Caparica since 1998, ending with a shout: “This is for Costa!”.
