FIFA has rejected the Danish national team’s request to train in jerseys with the message “human rights for all” during the World Cup in Qatar, the Danish Football Association (DBU) said on Thursday.
Denmark, which has taken an active role in defending migrant workers in the emirate and LGBTQI+ rights, wanted to spread the message on shirts as a form of protest against Qatar and its human rights record.
The Danish team also plans to present itself with a different headgear and a black alternative, to honor those killed or injured in the construction of stadiums, metro network, roads and hotels in Doha.
At the World Cup, Denmark is part of Group D, along with defending champions France, Tunisia and Australia, which was also one of the most critical participants in Qatar.
The Men’s World Cup will take place between November 20 and December 18, with the Portuguese team qualifying and placing in Group H, with Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea.
