Secretary of State regrets the result of the process that overthrew the president of the Judo Federation

The Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, João Paulo Correia, said Thursday that he regretted the result of the investigation carried out on the Portuguese Judo Federation (FPJ), which detected incompatibilities and dictated the loss of the mandate of President Jorge Fernandes.

“I know the conclusion of the investigation. The investigation was carried out with total impartiality and rigor, and determined certain illegalities that constitute the consequence of the loss of mandate of the president of the FPJ. It was the application of the law, which is the Legal Regime of Sports Federations (RJFD), and my comment is that the law is complied with,” said João Paulo Correia, in statements to the Portuguese news agency.

After a visit to the Higher School of Sports of Rio Maior and the center of stadiums in the city of Ribatejo, the minister regretted the result of the investigation carried out by the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ), known this Tuesday and which determined the loss of the mandate headed by Jorge Fernandes, with whom João Paulo Correia already spoke.

“Yes, I called him to tell him that I was sorry for the result of the ‘process’. An internal conflict of a modality,” he admitted.

In August, the judokas Telma Monteiro, Catarina Costa -who, however, withdrew-, Bárbara Timo, Rochele Nunes, Patrícia Sampaio and Anri Egutidze, as well as Rodrigo Lopes, accused Jorge Fernandes of discrimination and oppression.

The conflict was ‘latent’ and had new episodes in October, after the World Cups, held in Tashkhet, with the departure of Jorge Fernandes from the General Assembly of the FPJ with reinforced confidence and the dismissal of the coach Ana Hormigo, who had shown solidarity . with the judokas, in summer.

On Tuesday, a source from the IPDJ confirmed to Lusa the loss of mandate of Jorge Fernandes, for breach of article 51 of the Legal Regime of Sports Federations (RJFD), which lists the loss of mandate of the heads of federative bodies, due to ineligibility, incompatibility or for intervening in a contract in which they have an interest.

At stake was, among other things, the exercise of functions of Jorge Fernandes, fulfilling his second term in the direction of the FPJ, which he joined in 2017, at the Judo Clube de Coimbra, which was the subject of a complaint by the Judo Association of Castelo Branco.

“Above all, we always wanted to lead the process, in what is the intervention of the IPDJ, as an entity that ensures compliance with the Public Sports Utility attached to the FPJ, with total impartiality, impartiality and rigor. I cannot say whether or not I expected the conclusions, because the investigation was not politically directed, it was a legal direction, by the IPDJ, which investigated a set of facts, classified them as illegalities that violate the RJFD, and concluded for the loss of mandate. of the president of the FPJ”, concluded João Paul Correia.
