The Ghanaians have been excited about the World Cup and this Thursday’s match against Portugal is generating great expectations.
The Portuguese Hélio Gaspar has been in Ghana for almost 10 years. After his time in the construction sector, he now works in a paint factory. Colleagues, he says, “they like the Portuguese team”, but they trust that it is possible to beat them.
“They have a lot of confidence, a lot of confidence. They even say that they are going to give us a win, 4-0 or 5-0,” Hélio Gaspar told TSF🇧🇷
“They won the last game and in the end they said they think they can win everyone. They are only afraid of him. Brazil, for the rest, is not afraid of anyone else (…) in the final, maybe with Brazil, and such maybe they’ll still try to beat Brazil in the final”.
If Portugal has Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, João Félix and a series of other stars, the Ghanaians remember that they also have a legion playing in England.
“They are very excited about football, especially the English league, Chelsea, Manchester United… They wear shirts from all the English clubs, where they have many, many players.”
Enthusiasm for the World Cup is so great that since the competition began, Ghanaians have flocked to follow the matches on the radio. “They are always listening to the matches on the radio, everyone is excited mainly with the African teams, they are excited with all the teams.”
Although the time is not the best – 19:00 local time (16:00 in Ghana and mainland Portugal), the Portuguese in Ghana will gather to watch the game, Hélio Gaspar guarantees. “As in all of Portugal’s matches.”
